Google Business Profile
Set up your free listing so customers can find you when they search.
Why This Matters
When someone needs a lawn care service, cleaner, or pressure washer, what do they do?
They Google it.
"Lawn care near me" "House cleaning [city name]" "Pressure washing services"
If you don't have a Google Business Profile, you're invisible to these people. You're leaving money on the table every single day.
The good news: it's free, it takes 30 minutes to set up, and it can generate leads for years.
What Is Google Business Profile?
Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is Google's free directory of local businesses. When you search for a local service, the map and business listings that appear? That's Google Business Profile.
What it shows:
- Your business name
- Phone number
- Service area
- Hours
- Photos
- Reviews
- Link to your website (if you have one)
What it does for you:
- Shows up in "near me" searches
- Displays in Google Maps
- Builds credibility through reviews
- Lets customers contact you directly
- Completely free
Setting Up Your Profile
Step 1: Go to Google Business Profile
Visit business.google.com and sign in with your Google account.
If you don't have a Google account, create one. Use a professional email if possible (not cooldude2003@gmail.com).
Step 2: Enter Your Business Information
Business name:
- Use your actual business name
- Keep it simple and professional
- Don't stuff keywords ("Best Lawn Care Service Amazing Cheap Near You")
Business category:
- Choose the most accurate primary category
- Lawn care: "Lawn Care Service"
- Cleaning: "House Cleaning Service"
- Pressure washing: "Pressure Washing Service"
You can add secondary categories later.
Service area:
- Select the cities/zip codes you serve
- Start with your realistic service radius
- You can expand later
Contact information:
- Phone number (use your business line—Google Voice works)
- Website (optional—you can add later, or use your Facebook page)
Hours:
- Set realistic hours you're available
- Many service businesses: Mon-Sat 8am-6pm
- You can adjust based on when you actually answer the phone
Step 3: Verify Your Business
Google needs to verify you're real. Options include:
Postcard (most common):
- Google mails a postcard with a code
- Takes 5-7 days
- Enter the code when it arrives
Phone or email:
- Sometimes available for certain business types
- Instant verification
Video verification:
- Record a video showing your business
- Newer option, available for some businesses
Until you're verified, your profile won't appear in search. Complete verification as soon as possible.
Step 4: Complete Your Profile
After verification, fill in everything:
Business description: Write 2-3 sentences about what you do. Keep it clear and local.
Example: "Professional lawn care services in [City] and surrounding areas. We provide weekly mowing, trimming, edging, and seasonal cleanups. Locally owned, reliable service, and satisfaction guaranteed."
Services:
- List specific services you offer
- Add prices if you want (optional)
- Be specific: "Weekly Lawn Mowing," "Driveway Pressure Washing," "Move-Out Cleaning"
Photos:
- Add at least 5-10 photos
- Before/after shots of your work
- You working (shows you're real)
- Your equipment/vehicle
- Professional quality isn't required—just clear and well-lit
Attributes:
- Select relevant attributes
- "Locally owned," "Veteran-owned," etc.
- These help you stand out
Optimizing for Search
Having a profile isn't enough. You want to show up when people search.
How Google Ranks Local Businesses
Three main factors:
- Relevance: Does your business match what they searched for?
- Distance: How close are you to the searcher?
- Prominence: How established/reputable does your business appear?
How to Improve Each Factor
Relevance:
- Use accurate business categories
- List all your services clearly
- Include service keywords in your description
- Answer questions in your Q&A section
Distance:
- Set an accurate service area
- You'll naturally show up for nearby searches
- Can't really hack this—just serve your area well
Prominence:
- Get more reviews (most important)
- Get reviews with keywords ("Great lawn care service!")
- Post updates regularly
- Add photos consistently
- Respond to all reviews
The Review Game
Reviews are the #1 factor you can control for ranking higher.
More reviews = higher rankings = more calls = more customers = more reviews
It's a flywheel. Get it spinning.
How many reviews do you need?
- 5+ reviews: You look legitimate
- 10+ reviews: You look established
- 20+ reviews: You're competitive in most markets
- 50+ reviews: You're a market leader locally
We'll cover how to get reviews in the next lesson.
Google Business Profile Features to Use
Posts
You can create posts that show on your profile. Use them for:
- Special offers
- Seasonal promotions
- Before/after photos
- Updates about your business
Posts expire after 7 days, so post weekly if possible.
Example post: "Spring cleanup special! Book your first mow of the season and get 20% off. Call or text [number] to schedule."
Messaging
You can enable messaging so customers can text you through Google.
- Turns on chat feature in your listing
- Messages go to your phone or email
- Respond quickly—Google shows your response time
Q&A
People can ask questions on your profile. You can (and should) answer them.
Pro tip: Ask and answer your own common questions:
- "What areas do you serve?"
- "How much does lawn mowing cost?"
- "Do you offer free estimates?"
This provides helpful info and adds keywords to your profile.
Booking
If you have scheduling software, you can add a booking link. Customers can schedule directly from your profile.
For now, just having your phone number is fine.
Managing Your Profile
Check It Weekly
- Respond to any reviews
- Answer any questions
- Add new photos from recent jobs
- Create a post
Keep Information Updated
- Update hours if they change
- Add new services when you offer them
- Change phone number if it changes
Monitor Insights
Google provides data on your profile:
- How many people viewed it
- How many clicked to call
- How many asked for directions
- What searches you appeared in
Check monthly to understand what's working.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Keyword Stuffing Your Business Name
Wrong: "John's Amazing Best Lawn Care Service Cheap Mowing Near Me [City]" Right: "John's Lawn Care" or "GreenScape Lawn Services"
Google may suspend profiles that stuff keywords in the name.
Fake Address
If you work out of your home, don't use a fake business address. Set up as a "Service Area Business" and hide your address. You'll still show up in searches.
Ignoring Reviews
Not responding to reviews (especially negative ones) looks bad. Respond to everything professionally.
Inconsistent Information
Make sure your name, address, and phone number match everywhere online. Inconsistencies confuse Google.
Setting It and Forgetting It
An inactive profile ranks lower. Regular posts, new photos, and review responses signal an active business.

Week 1: Set up profile, await verification Week 2: Get verified, complete all profile sections Week 3-4: Get first few reviews, start posting Month 2-3: Start appearing in searches, first calls from Google Month 4+: Consistent lead flow if you keep building reviews
